  • Stretched clusters: Virtual SAN 6.1 supports stretched clusters that span two geographic locations to protect data from site failures or loss of network connection.
  • The VMware Virtual SAN Witness Appliance 6.1 is a virtual witness host packaged as a virtual appliance. It functions as an ESXi host configured as a witness host for a Virtual SAN stretched cluster. You can download the Virtual SAN Witness Appliance 6.1 OVA from the VMware Virtual SAN download Web site.
  • Hybrid and all-flash configurations. Virtual SAN 6.1 supports both hybrid and all-flash clusters. To configure an all-flash cluster, click Create a new disk group under Virtual SAN Disk Management (Manage > Settings), and select Flash as the Capacity type. When claiming disk groups, you can select flash devices for both capacity and cache.
  • Improved upgrade process. Upgrade supports direct upgrades from Virtual SAN 5.5 and 6.0 to Virtual SAN 6.1.
  • Virtual SAN 6.1 includes an integrated Health Service that monitors the cluster health and enables you to diagnose and fix issues with the Virtual SAN cluster. The Virtual SAN Health Service provides several checks on hardware compatibility, networking configuration and operations, advanced configuration options, storage device health, and Virtual SAN object health. If the Health Service detects any health issues, it triggers vCenter events and alarms. To view the health checks for a Virtual SAN cluster, click Monitor > Virtual SAN > Health.
  • Virtual SAN monitors solid state drive and magnetic disk drive health and proactively isolates unhealthy devices by unmounting them. It detects gradual failure of a Virtual SAN disk and isolates the device before congestion builds up within the affected host and the entire Virtual SAN cluster. An alarm is generated from each host whenever an unhealthy device is detected and an event is generated if an unhealthy device is automatically unmounted.
  • Virtual SAN for Remote Office / Branch Office (ROBO) – provides the ability and support to deploy Virtual SAN clusters for ROBO scenarios. Customers can now deploy large numbers of 2-node Virtual SAN clusters that can be centrally managed from a centralized data center through an individual vCenter Server instance.
  • Virtual SAN Replication with vSphere Replication – utilizes vSphere Replication for its replication data services. vSphere Replication with Virtual SAN supports RPOs from 5 minutes to 24 hours. VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) can be used as part of the solution in order to deliver a fully orchestrated disaster recovery solution.
  • Support for Multi-Processor Fault Tolerance (SMP-FT) – is now able to support vSphere Fault Tolerance and provide continuous availability with zero downtime for mission critical applications in the event of hardware failure.
  • Support for Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) and Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) – supports clustering technologies from both Oracle and Microsoft. With Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) customers can run multiple Oracle RDBMS instances accessing the Virtual SAN datastore, delivering better performance, scalability and resilience. Similarly, with Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC)) failover clustering functionality is enabled, and can guard against application and service failures
  • Maximum Performance and Low latencies – VMware continues the performance improvement of Virtual SAN by expanding the support of new types of hardware devices and interfaces.
    • ULLtra DIMM™ – ULLtraDIMM SSDs connect flash storage to the memory channel via DIMM slots, achieving very low (<5us) write latency. Ultra DIMM provides even greater density and performance – for example, it allows for a 12-TB All Flash Virtual SAN host in a thin blade form factor, as well as 3x improvement in latency compared to external arrays.
    • NVMe – Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) is a new communications interface developed especially for SSDs allowing for greater parallelism to be utilized by both hardware and software and as a result various performance improvements. Leveraging NVMe in a Virtual SAN all flash deployment resulted in 3.2M IOPS measured on a 32-node cluster – ~100K IOPS/Host.
  • Virtual SAN Management Pack for vRealize Operations – new integration with vRealize operations delivers a comprehensive set of features to help manage Virtual SAN with global data visualization

vSAN 6.2 (vSphere 6.0U2 – Build 3620759 –Release Date 15/03/2016)

License Standard or Advanced or Enterprise or ROBO

  • Deduplication and compression. Virtual SAN 6.2 supports deduplication and compression to eliminate duplicate data. This technique reduces the total storage space required to meet your needs. When you enable deduplication and compression on a Virtual SAN cluster, redundant copies of data in a particular disk group are reduced to single copy. Deduplication and compression are available as a cluster-wide setting on all-flash clusters.
  • RAID 5 and RAID 6 erasure coding. Virtual SAN 6.2 supports both RAID 5 and RAID 6 erasure coding to reduce the storage space required to protect your data. RAID 5 and RAID 6 are available as a policy attribute for VMs in all-flash clusters. You can use RAID 5 in clusters with at least four fault domains, and RAID 6 in clusters with at least six fault domains.
  • Software checksum. Virtual SAN 6.2 supports software-based checksum on hybrid and all-flash clusters. The software checksum policy attribute is enabled by default on all objects in the Virtual SAN cluster.
  • New on-disk format. Virtual SAN 6.2 supports upgrades to new on-disk virtual file format 3.0 through the vSphere Web Client. This file system provides support for new features in the Virtual SAN cluster. On-disk format version 3.0 is based on an internal 4K block size technology, which provides improved efficiency, but can result in reduced performance if the guest operating system I/Os are not 4K aligned. >
  • IOPS limits. Virtual SAN supports IOPS limits to restrict the number of I/O (read/write) operations per second for a specified object. When the number of read/write operations reaches the IOPS limit, those operations are delayed until the current second expires. The IOPS limit is a policy attribute that you can apply to any Virtual SAN object, including VMDK, namespace, and so on.
  • IPv6. Virtual SAN supports IPv4 or IPv6 addressing.
  • Space reporting. The Virtual SAN 6.2 Capacity monitor displays information about the Virtual SAN datastore, including used space and free space, and provides a breakdown of capacity usage by different object types or data types.
  • Health service. Virtual SAN 6.2 includes new health checks that help you monitor the cluster and enable you to diagnose and fix problems with the cluster. If the Virtual SAN health service detects health issues, it triggers vCenter events and alarms.
  • Performance service. Virtual SAN 6.2 includes performance service monitors with cluster-level, host-level, VM-level, and disk-level statistics. The performance service collects and analyzes performance statistics and displays the data in a graphical format. You can use the performance charts to manage your workload and determine the root cause of problems.
  • Write-through in-memory cache. Virtual SAN 6.2 improves virtual machine performance by using a host resident write-through read cache. This caching algorithm reduces read I/O latency and reduces Virtual SAN CPU and network usage.

License Standard or Advanced or Enterprise or ROBO Standard or ROBO Advanced

  • iSCSI target service. The Virtual SAN iSCSI target service enables physical workloads that are outside the Virtual SAN cluster to access the Virtual SAN datastore. An iSCSI initiator on a remote host can transport block-level data to an iSCSI target on a storage device in the Virtual SAN cluster.
  • 2 Node Direct Connect with witness traffic separation. Virtual SAN 6.5 provides support for an alternate VMkernel interface to communicate with the witness host in a stretched cluster configuration. This support enables you to separate witness traffic from Virtual SAN data traffic, with no routing required from the Virtual SAN network to the witness host. You can simplify connectivity to the witness host in certain stretched cluster and 2 Node configurations. In 2 Node configurations, you can make one or more node-to-node, direct connections for Virtual SAN data traffic, without using a high speed switch. Using an alternate VMkernel interface for witness traffic is supported in stretched cluster configurations, but only when it is connected to the same physical switch as the interface used for Virtual SAN data traffic.
  • PowerCLI support. VMware vSphere PowerCLI adds command-line scripting support for Virtual SAN, to help you automate configuration and management tasks. vSphere PowerCLI provides a Windows PowerShell interface to the vSphere API. PowerCLI includes cmdlets for administering Virtual SAN components.
  • 512e drive support. Virtual SAN 6.5 supports 512e magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs) in which the physical sector size is 4096 bytes, but the logical sector size emulates a sector size of 512 bytes.
  • All-Flash to all editions

vSAN 6.6 (vSphere 6.5d – Build 5310538 –Release Date 18/04/2017)

License Standard, Advanced or Enterprise or ROBO Standard, ROBO Advanced (ROBO Enterprise was introduced in vSAN 6.6.1)

  • Unicast. In vSAN 6.6 and later releases, multicast is not required on the physical switches that support the vSAN cluster. If some hosts in your vSAN cluster are running earlier versions of software, a multicast network is still required.
  • Encryption. vSAN supports data-at-rest encryption of the vSAN datastore. When you enable encryption, vSAN performs a rolling reformat of every disk group in the cluster. vSAN encryption requires a trusted connection between vCenter Server and a key management server (KMS). The KMS must support the Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) 1.1 standard.
  • Enhanced stretched cluster availability with local fault protection. You can provide local fault protection for virtual machine objects within a single site in a stretched cluster. You can define a Primary level of failures to tolerate for the cluster, and a Secondary level of failures to tolerate for objects within a single site. When one site is unavailable, vSAN maintains availability with local redundancy in the available site.
    • Enhanced stretched cluster availability with local fault protection. You can provide local fault protection for virtual machine objects within a single site in a stretched cluster. Define a Primary level of failures to tolerate for the cluster, and a Secondary level of failures to tolerate for objects within a single site. When one site is unavailable, vSAN maintains availability with local redundancy in the available site.
    • Change witness host. You can change the witness host for a stretched cluster. On the Fault Domains and Stretched Cluster page, click Change witness host.
  • Configuration Assist and Updates. You can use the Configuration Assist and Updates pages to check the configuration of your vSAN cluster, and resolve any issues.
    • Configuration Assist helps you verify the configuration of cluster components, resolve issues, and troubleshoot problems. Configuration checks are divided into categories, similar to those in the vSAN health service. The configuration checks cover hardware compatibility, network, and vSAN configuration options.
    • You can use the Updates page to update storage controller firmware and drivers to meet vSAN requirements.
  • Resynchronization throttling. You can throttle the IOPS used for cluster resynchronization. Use this control if latencies are rising in the cluster due to resynchronization, or if resynchronization traffic is too high on a host.
  • Health service enhancements. New and enhanced health checks for encryption, cluster membership, time drift, controller firmware, disk groups, physical disks, disk balance. Online health checks can monitor vSAN cluster health and send the data to the VMware analytics backend system for advanced analysis. You must participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program to use online health checks.
  • Host-based vSAN monitoring. You can monitor vSAN health and basic configuration through the ESXi host client. In the host client navigator, click Storage. Select the vSAN datastore, and then click Monitor. Click the tabs to view vSAN information for the host. On the vSAN tab, you can click Edit Settings to correct configuration issues at the host level.
  • Performance service enhancements. vSAN performance service includes statistics for networking, resynchronization, and iSCSI. You can select saved time ranges in performance views. vSAN saves each selected time range when you run a performance query.
  • vSAN integration with vCenter Server Appliance. You can create a vSAN cluster as you deploy a vCenter Server Appliance, and host the appliance on that cluster. The vCenter Server Appliance Installer enables you to create a one-host vSAN cluster, with disks claimed from the host. vCenter Server Appliance is deployed on the vSAN cluster.
  • Maintenance mode enhancements. The Confirm Maintenance Mode dialog box provides information to guide your maintenance activities. You can view the impact of each data evacuation option. For example, you can check whether enough free space is available to complete the selected option.
  • Rebalancing and repair enhancements. Disk rebalancing operations are more efficient. Manual rebalancing operation provides better progress reporting.
    • Rebalancing protocol has been tuned to be more efficient and achieve better cluster balance. Manual rebalance provides more updates and better progress reporting.
    • More efficient repair operations require fewer cluster resynchronizations. vSAN can partially repair degraded or absent components to increase the Failures to tolerate even if vSAN cannot make the object compliant.
  • New vSAN on-disk format v5.0
  • Disk failure handling. If a disk experiences sustained high latencies or congestion, vSAN considers the device as a dying disk, and evacuates data from the disk. vSAN handles the dying disk by evacuating or rebuilding data. No user action is required, unless the cluster lacks resources or has inaccessible objects. When vSAN completes evacuation of data, the health status is listed as DyingDiskEmpty. vSAN does not unmount the failed device.
  • New esxcli commands.
    • Display vSAN cluster health: esxcli vsan health
    • Display vSAN debug information: esxcli vsan debug

vSAN 6.6.1 (vSphere 6.5U1 – Build 5969303 –Release Date 27/07/2017)

License Standard, Advanced or Enterprise or ROBO Standard, ROBO Advanced or ROBO Enterprise

  • VMware Update Manager build recommendations for vSAN. Update Manager can scan the vSAN cluster and recommend host baselines that include updates, patches, and extensions. It manages recommended baselines, validates the support status from vSAN HCL, and downloads the correct ESXi ISO images from VMware.
  • vSAN requires Internet access to generate build recommendations. If your vSAN cluster uses a proxy to connect to the Internet, vSAN can generate recommendations for patch upgrades, but not for major upgrades.
  • Performance diagnostics. Performance diagnostics analyzes previously executed benchmark tests. It detects issues, suggests remediation steps, and provides supporting performance graphs for further insight. Performance Diagnostics requires participation in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).
  • Increased support for locator LEDs on vSAN disks. Gen-9 HPE controllers in pass-through mode now support vSAN activation of locator LEDs. Blinking LEDs help to identify and isolate specific drives.

vSAN 6.7 (vSphere 6.7 GA – Build 8169922 –Release Date 17/04/2018)

License Standard, Advanced or Enterprise or ROBO Standard, ROBO Advanced or ROBO Enterprise

  • HTML5 User Interface
A completely redesigned user interface delivers a modern management experience. The new interface was built using the same framework as other VMware products, so you’ll have a unified and intuitive experience managing the most complete SDDC stack. In addition, the new UI delivers optimized workflows to reduce the number of clicks to perform many functions.
  • vRealize Operations within vCenter
Customers get two ways to manage their vSAN environments with vRealize Operations: Global operations overview in vCenter, and advanced monitoring, troubleshooting and capacity management with vRealize Operations. Customers gain a single pane of glass to monitor and control their HCI environment through vRealize Operations insights directly within vCenter, providing an overview of vSAN and vSphere environments as well as surfacing up critical alerts and operations insights. Customers can then expand the insights and actions as well as expedite time-to-value with full vRealize Operations advanced capabilities, including full environment overview across stretched clusters, troubleshooting with metrics and logs, and capacity management including time remaining, reclamation and deduplications and compression savings.
  • Introducing vSAN ReadyCare
vSAN ReadyCare support highlights VMware’s commitment to vSAN customers and delivers holistic support through people, analytics and technology. Through predictive modelling in vSAN Support Insight, VMware analyzes anonymous data from thousands of vSAN customers and pushes alerts to customers before issues arise. In addition, vSAN Health Services provide real-time support notifications and remediation recommendations.
  • FIPS 140-2 Validated Encryption
vSAN offered the first native HCI encryption solution for data-at-rest, and now with vSAN 6.7, vSAN Encryption is the first FIPS 140-2 validated software solution, meeting stringent US Federal Government requirements. vSAN Encryption delivers lower data protection costs and greater flexibility by being hardware agnostic and by offering simplified key management. This is also the first HCI solution with a DISA-approved STIG.
  • Increased Application Resiliency
vSAN delivers a more consistent application experience for end users with intelligent, self-healing capabilities that include adaptive resynchronization, fast failovers for air gapped networks, and replica consolidation. Adaptive Resync intelligently manages IO traffic to minimize disruptions to applications during resync operations. Replica consolidation reduces the time and effort to enter a host into maintenance mode. Finally, air gapped network failover times are eliminated due to immediate failover.
  • Enhanced Stretched Cluster Availability
Stretched Cluster deployments are further enhanced with intelligent witness traffic separation, primary site override, and efficient resyncs. Witness traffic separation and efficient resync optimizes the path and size of data transmitted over each link, making failovers transparent to application end users. Primary site override heightens availability of workloads by better logic in the event of site failure.
  • Optimized Next-Generation Applications
vSAN utilizes a new storage policy—vSAN Host Pinning—to adapt the efficiency and resiliency of vSAN for next-generation, shared-nothing applications. With this policy, vSAN maintains a single copy of the data and stores the data blocks with the ESXi host running the VM. This option is of particularly important for applications like Big Data (Hadoop), NoSQL (such as DataStax), and other applications that maintain data redundancy at the application layer.
  • Increased Support for Business-Critical Application Deployments
vSAN now supports more mission-critical application deployments through Windows Server Failover Clusters (WSFC) support, which reduces complexity of storage management for those workloads and helps customers accelerate their move toward a unified SDDC experience.
  • Proactive Support via vSAN Support Insight
